Property Records -- Griffith's Valuation |
Like the Tithe Applotments, the Griffiths Valuation records were property records that can serve as a substitute for census data. I will not pretend to understand the historical context of these records, but will simply observe that they were property records that began in the middle of the 19th century, organized according to Baronies, Parishes, and Townlands, showing the occupiers of each parcel, their immediate lessors, a description of the parcel, the size, and the value of the holdings. The first such records for the Toem area were compiled in 1851, and consist of printed tables and a corresponding parcel map (based on the detailed Ordnance Survey maps of the period). The map at right is a low-res example of the parcel map. |
