Property Records -- Tithe Applotment Records |
|
It is nice to have access to census records, but these are not always complete and sometimes are not available at all. In the case of old County Tipperary, the earliest records that look like a census in the traditional sense was what is referred to as the "Religious Census of 1767." There are, however, no Buckleys listed for the Cappawhite area in this record.
The next set of data for the region, a census substitute rather than an actual census, is the Tithe Applotment records of 1826. As I understand it, these records were a sort of property tax roll for the purpose of collecting a church tax (or "tithe") for the benefit fo the Church of Ireland. Since most of the taxpayers (leaseholders) were Catholic rather than Church of Ireland parishoners, this was a very unpopular tax. There are several sources on the web with data extracted from these records. They all agree on the names and locations, though they differ on the level of detail offered. The map at right shows the names that appear in all fo the data compilations, together with the Townlands where these names were found.

The original records for the Tithe Applotment data, available on microfilm from a few sources, include the names of the propertyholders, the size of their total holdings (in acres, roods, and perches), that acreage broken down in terms of the quality of the lands making upsorted alphabetically by name (very helpful for finding names), the original records were compiled in a more or less geographical order that shows something of how the families were located relative to one another. Although we have not yet made use of that data here, Phil Buckley acquired the images of the original records from the LDS microfilm (the above image from the Townland of Moher is an example) and I did make use of this additional data in the parcel-by-parcel analysis included elsewhere in this site. these holdings, and the value of these holdings. In addition, while the extracts available on the web tend to compile the data as a list |
